Environmental Review
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires early consideration of the impacts your federally funded project may have on the human and natural environment.
Specifically, federally funded projects and projects requiring federal approvals must consider the environmental impacts of proposed actions. NEPA is the procedural umbrella under which the social, economic, natural environment, and historic preservation impacts are assessed according to applicable statute, regulation, and executive order. Project sponsors can analyze environmental impacts and incorporate public engagement early and often throughout the planning process to achieve time and cost savings in project delivery.
The White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) is responsible for developing procedures for Federal agency implementation of NEPA. Federal agencies are required to develop additional agency-specific procedures for implementing NEPA and carrying out the environmental review process. States and local jurisdictions may also have established environmental planning requirements. It is important to understand all the applicable environmental review requirements at play to achieve common goals and streamline the process.
