Volpe Talks: Transportation Ideas Worth Sharing
As part of the Cambridge Science Festival, come and hear a series of short, live talks direct from Volpe team members working on emerging transportation issues such as maritime security, nonmotorized transportation, and advancing the flow of aviation traffic. The talks will conclude with a tour of the Volpe train, airplane, and car simulators.
Risk Modeling for Small UAS in Controlled Airspace Around Airports
Tom Sheridan, PhD, and Jason Lu discussed how the U.S. DOT Volpe Center is working with FAA to develop a collision risk model for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in key terminal airspace where business and commercial users also enter the airspace. This work will inform requirements for an automated authorization and notification tool for small UAV operations.
U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s Freight/Fuel Transportation Optimization Tool
Dr. Kristin Lewis presented "U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s Freight/Fuel Transportation Optimization Tool: Exploring Future Energy Scenarios." The Volpe Center has developed flowable, multimodal transportation optimization tool used to evaluate the costs, transportation requirements, and impacts of future freight scenarios, particularly those focused on the energy sector. Current analyses are evaluating potential alternative and fossil fuel transport scenarios. Dr. Lewis discussed what the tool does and how we’re using it.
Our Shared Transportation Future
The next 15 years will look different than the last 15 years. What will we do with that knowledge? In his talk at Volpe, General Darren McDew discussed challenges and opportunities that are coming over the next decade-and-a-half. Will we build on the solid foundation of our relationships and get after the challenges of tomorrow today? Will we find ways to challenge our thinking and norms and identify the people, technology, and processes that will deliver success?
