Quiet User Interface Environmental Test Lab

Testing Free from Acoustical Contamination
The U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s Quiet User Interface Environmental Test (QUIET) Lab is a collaboration between our Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division and our Human Factors team. The Lab has extremely low background levels, enabling interviews or human subject and equipment testing free from acoustic contamination and compromise by ambient sounds (e.g., HVAC, lights, or other anthropogenic sounds). The Lab environment also facilitates the testing of specialized acoustic instrumentation in advance of deployment in remote environments.
Inside the QUIET Lab
QUIET Lab features include:
- Hemi-anechoic chamber
- Electronic connections enabling remote control of instrumentation
- Video surveillance for human subject testing
- Adjacent rest/break room, if needed
