Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve - Alternative Transportation Study
Volpe is assisting the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve in planning for the implementation of a multi-modal, alternative transportation project, the Timucuan Boat and Kingsley Tram Tour. The Preserve is a 46,000-acre area operated under a partnership agreement between the National Park Service (NPS), the Florida State Park System, the City of Jacksonville, and over 300 private and corporate landowners. The proposed service is intended to connect the Fort Caroline National Memorial and Fort George Island and provide visitors with an easily accessible and otherwise unavailable opportunity to experience marine ecology and history of the Preserve. The Preserve applied for and received funds from the Federal Transit Administration's Paul S. Sarbanes Transit in Parks Program (TRIP) to help plan for and implement the service. Volpe is assisting the Preserve in this effort through four tasks:
- Identify a financially feasible/sustainable alternative transit system on Fort George Island, including providing assistance on vehicle selection and financial analysis.
- Will address all NEPA environmental compliance issues in connection with the transit service, including use of an existing structure for vehicle storage.
- Assist in the analysis of the marine passenger transportation service, including identification and evaluation of projected demand, service plan and schedule, vehicles, and cost.
- Assist in financial analysis and procurement planning for the transit and marine services, including the development of a prospectus for a new concession contract(s).
