Types of Positions Available
Aerospace Engineers – Support senior engineers in a variety of projects that may include analysis of aviation noise, analysis of aircraft wake data collected by sensors at major airports, or planning, testing, and evaluating FAA’s Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). Work will help improve air traffic safety and traffic congestion, and mitigate environmental impacts.
Computer Engineers – Use knowledge of computer and programming advances to support senior engineers in tasks that may include conducting cybersecurity assessments of automotive electronic control systems and controller area networks, assessing system security for connected and automated vehicles, or assisting in the development and evaluation of new software systems for aviation marine and surface transportation systems.
Electrical Engineers – Assist in a range of engineering tasks that may include technical, analytical, architectural engineering, and project management support for improvements to transportation infrastructure, equipment, facilities, vehicles, vessels, railways, waterways and ports, surface structures, and their systems.
Environmental Engineers – Analyze, interpret, and provide solutions to tasks associated with hazardous waste management and remediation, environmental preservation and conservation, and environmental compliance.
Fire Protection Engineers – Use computer-aided engineering to assist in the execution of fire and life safety projects from design through construction. The studies and work efforts focus on fire protection compliance status, deficiencies related to fire safety/code compliance, and improving occupational safety at transportation facilities.
Mechanical and Civil Engineers – Support senior engineers in a variety of projects that may include graphic arts and elementary statistics/dynamics. Work supports projects that investigate topics such as vehicles and structures, including aging aircraft, tank car puncture resistance, automobile crashworthiness, railroad truck safety, and highway/transportation engineering (highway design, construction, materials, survey and mapping, and asset management).
Community Planners – Work on programs related to transportation planning/research, environmental stewardship, and realty. Work will help increase the level of expertise of transportation professionals and contribute to the design and implementation of federal transportation programs, strategic plans, and qualitative evaluations.
Economists – Support projects that may include program and operational test evaluations, industry and cost studies, benefit cost studies supporting regulatory action, and forecasting. Consulting projects are designed to assist clients through the development and use of decision support tools, and in the analysis of policy and program options relating to transportation systems.
Policy Analysts – Serve as a member of a team that researches, analyzes, develops, and implements policies and guidance. Possible policy work areas include emerging trends in transportation technology (connected and automated vehicles, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, etc.), decision analysis, risk assessment, economic regulations, qualitative analysis, strategic planning, program evaluation, environmental analysis, environmental permitting, and transportation legislation.
Operations Research Analysts – Use analytical and communication skills to select and modify appropriate methods of operation, analyze results, and prepare reports. Projects may involve fuel economy, discrete choice analysis, automotive supply chain/market data and analysis, aviation systems, highway vehicle crashworthiness/crash prevention, intelligent transportation system (ITS) concepts, telecommunications, and/or navigation/surveillance systems.
Management Analysts – Apply the principles and concepts regarding management and public policy analysis, data analysis, and project goal development with contact interaction with other professionals working in related areas. Project support may include enhancing DOT processing systems and web applications.
Computer Scientists – Opportunities in various technical divisions may include supporting the development of IT system requirements, software design, enterprise architecture, system testing and deployment, infrastructure support, or cybersecurity services. Students interested in marine operations or marine security may assist with work on logistic and situational awareness information systems such as the Maritime Safety and Security Information System (MSSIS).
Environmental Scientists – Opportunities in various technical divisions may include assisting with analytical studies that investigate the environmental impact of transportation systems, supporting projects to develop energy and environmental policies and drive reductions in carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions, or assisting in the planning of field construction activities of transportation infrastructure development.
