Colonial National Historical Park - Shuttle Service and Visitor/Motorist Survey
Volpe conducted a shuttle service survey (July 2009) and visitor/motorist survey (August 2010) in order to gain a better understanding of travel choices in Colonial National Historic Park (NHP) and incorporate public feedback into future plans for the shuttle system. Colonial NHP seasonal shuttle services, in operation since 2004, connect visitors to key attractions in the area, including Colonial Williamsburg, Historic Jamestowne, and the Yorktown Battlefield. The surveys found overwhelming satisfaction with the service amongst riders with 99% of those interviewed indicating that they were either "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the service. The non-rider survey found that over 50% of those visitors traveling by car were not aware of shuttle service. 80% of that group indicated that they were willing or may be willing to use the shuttle service on a future visit. Volpe found that that a number of visitors are interested in using alternative transportation, but lacked sufficient information on the service. The reports indicated an opportunity to increase ridership on the shuttle through enhancing publicity of the service in the Historic Triangle area and improving signage at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center.
