THE U.S. DOT VOLPE CENTER’S SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT CAPABILITY APPRAISED AT CMMI-DEV V2.0 MATURITY LEVEL 3
The U.S. DOT Volpe Center announced that our software development capability within our Research and Innovative Technology organization was recently appraised at Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) Capability Maturity Model Integration Development (CMMI-DEV) v2.0 Maturity Level 3. CMMI is a proven, outcome-based performance model and the globally accepted standard for improving capability, optimizing business performance, and aligning operations to business goals. LEARN MORE.
THE U.S. DOT VOLPE CENTER SUPPORTED FAA REQUIREMENTS MANAGEMENT EFFORTS
Requirements management provided FAA Program Management Organization programs with the knowledge and tools to efficiently manage program requirements. To facilitate this, FAA partnered with U.S. DOT Volpe Center to develop workshops, review requirements, and create metrics using a detail-oriented, collaborative, and results-driven approach to deliver requirements management governance and best practices, lifecycle support, and knowledge sharing—which enabled FAA PMO to be better positioned to cost-effectively meet needs as defined and within scope. HOW TO PRODUCE BETTER COST ESTIMATES FOR MEDIUM- TO LARGE-SCALE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS
Estimating transportation-related software projects in the government space presents specific challenges, as software tends to be more complex due to advanced logic that is needed to implement business rules related to government regulation. The U.S. DOT Volpe Center has found that for multimillion-dollar software development projects, a duration based solely on effort and resource availability must be adjusted by a factor of 1.3 to produce a realistic schedule. Moreover, the mere act of thinking about tasks almost always turns up more project work that must be estimated. LEARN MORE.
