New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park - Alternative Transportation Systems Evaluation and Analysis
The New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park has proposed a phased approach for an alternative transportation shuttle system that will link park sites with parking facilities, ferry and cruise ship service, cultural sites, and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth during different seasons. Volpe conducted the Phase 1 evaluation of existing shuttles piloted by the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Volpe examined the feasibility of establishing shuttle operations and assessed the sustainability of a park shuttle service, including potential funding sources, shuttle routes, revenues and expenditures, operating costs, and financial and operational partnerships. Alternative-fueled vehicles were also explored and are of interest to the park and its partners.
