Gateway National Recreation Area, Jamaica Bay Unit - Jamaica Bay Greenway Missing Links Study
Volpe conducted a feasibility study of the development of a safe, non-motorized network of on- and off-road connections to complete the Jamaica Bay Greenway between the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Jacob Riis Park, and to improve access from subway and ferry lines. The 26-mile greenway will be a partnership with multiple public agencies at the city and state levels; however, NPS has a strong interest in completing the connections to Jamaica Bay Unit sites. The study suggest a number of near term interventions like signage and markings designed to enhance bicycle connections relatively quickly, at minimal cost and with minimal disruption to traffic and local residents. Long term visions in the study call for a reconfiguration of one of the main arterials through the study area, Beach Channel Drive. The work was completed in consultation with NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of City Planning, NYC Parks Department, and Regional Plan Association.
