Gateway National Recreation Area - Alternative Transportation Feasibility Study
Gateway National Recreation Area provides convenient access to outdoor recreation in the National Park System for millions of residents and visitors to what remains the most populous metropolitan area in the nation. Population density and the resulting scarcity of space have contributed to the lowest ratio of car ownership in the nation for New York City (NYC) residents, while simultaneously encouraging the most extensive network of public transit in the United States. The Jamaica Bay unit of GATE is at the fringe of the metropolitan area, and very little of the existing transit infrastructure from effectively transporting visitors to, or through, much of the park.
The Jamaica Bay Unit has great potential to link to existing alternative transportation options outside of the unit, particularly public transit, but is in need of planning to determine the best way to effectively and efficiently do so. This effort will study how alternative transportation may play a role in car-less travel in and around the Jamaica Bay Unit.
