Automated Vehicles - Coming Soon to a Driveway Near You?

Automated or autonomous? That is the question Gary Ritter, director of the Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies at Volpe, The National Transportation Systems Center, presented to the transportation community on June 26, 2012.

About the Speaker

Gary T. Ritter directs the Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies at Volpe, The National Transportation Systems Center—a research and innovation center that explores innovative applications of advanced computer, communications, navigation, and information technologies to enhance the safety, mobility, and energy/environmental performance of transportation systems. The scope of his research spans vehicle crash avoidance technologies, electronic systems safety and resilience, advanced technology assessment, field operational test and evaluation, technology policy and institutional issues, as well as strategic planning and research program management. Ritter oversees the U.S. DOT Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and technology transfer mission. Ritter also oversees the Office of Research and Technology Applications' technology transfer functions within Volpe under the Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act of 1980, as amended.

Ritter is a technical authority with over 20 years of experience in the development and application of advanced intelligent transportation systems (ITS) concepts and technology for the improvement of transportation systems safety and operations. He is a founding member of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America. He is a member of the Infrastructure Systems Committee and a member of the Advanced Technology Committee within the American Society of Civil Engineers Transportation and Development Institute. Ritter co-chaired the 7th International Conference on Applications of Advanced Technology in Transportation and serves on the Advanced Technology Committee within the American Society of Civil Engineers Transportation and Development Institute and the Advanced Technologies in Transportation Systems track of the first Transportation and Development Institute Congress on Integrated Transportation and Development for a Better Tomorrow.

Ritter has a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in civil engineering - transportation specialty from Stanford University.
