The Uncertainty of the "Made In" Label in Today's Global Economy
Stephen M. Carmel, a senior vice president at Maersk Line Limited, spoke about the "made in" label's irrelevance in today's global economy during a presentation at Volpe, The National Transportation Systems Center, on February 16, 2012.
About the Speaker
Stephen M. Carmel, senior vice president at Maritime Services at Maersk Line, Limited (MLL), is responsible for all technical and operating activities. He previously held positions in operations and finance for U.S. Marine Management, Inc. and Maersk Line, Limited. Carmel began his career sailing as a deck officer and Master primarily on tankers.
Carmel graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He also holds an MA in economics and an MBA from Old Dominion University. He is currently a PhD candidate in international studies with an emphasis in international political economy and second emphasis in conflict. Carmel is a certified management accountant (CMA) and is certified in financial management (CFM). His research and publishing interests are in maritime security, trade and conflict, and arctic regional issues.
Carmel is a member of the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel, a 2009 senior fellow at the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University, a board of trustees member of the Old Dominion University Research Foundation, a member of the Marine Board of the National Research Council, and a member of the Hydrographic Services Review Panel for NOAA. He is also a member of the CSR Science and Education Advisory Committee at Stevens Institute, the North American Committee for Det Norske Veritas, the North American Committee, American Bureau of Shipping, on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Maritime Association, and the Advisory Council of the International Maritime, Ports and Logistics Management Institute, at Old Dominion University. Carmel is also a member of various industry and academic associations including the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads, and the American Economic Association.
