Acting Director of Information Technology

Michael Lau is the U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s Information Systems Security Manager (ISSM) with 24 years of information technology experience at the U.S. DOT Volpe Center. He began his career in the Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division in 2000 as a Computer Engineer and joined the Office of Information Technology in 2016. As the ISSM, Lau is responsible for overseeing the U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s cybersecurity program, providing security education and awareness training, and serving as the primary liaison for the U.S. DOT Volpe Center and the U.S. DOT Chief Information Security Officer.

He partnered with U.S. DOT’s Office of the Chief Information Officer in the successful deployment of the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency’s Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) program at the U.S. DOT Volpe Center. This effort provides near real-time monitoring, automated inventory management, streamlined compliance with federal cybersecurity mandates, and improved situational awareness to assist in incident response. Lau was also responsible for deploying a vulnerability patching solution during the COVID-19 pandemic that allowed remote workstations to be securely updated while staff worked from home. He will continue his role as the ISSM while serving as Acting Director of Information Technology. Lau holds a B.S. in computer engineering from Boston University (Boston, MA).
