Michael Lau

Director of Information Technology

Mike LauMichael Lau serves as the director of information technology at the U.S. DOT Volpe Center, bringing more than 26 years of dedicated IT expertise to the organization. Lau began his U.S. DOT Volpe Center career in 2000 as a computer engineer within the Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division, later transitioning to the Office of Information Technology in 2016.

In his current role, Lau orchestrates the U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s comprehensive IT infrastructure and operations. He leads multidisciplinary teams across all core pillars of technology, including networking, data center operations, cybersecurity, the Internet of Things (IoT), enterprise applications, and customer service support.

Previously, as the U.S. DOT Volpe Center's Information Systems Security Manager, Lau collaborated closely with the U.S. DOT Office of the Chief Information Officer to successfully deploy the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) program. This critical initiative delivered near real-time monitoring, automated inventory management, and enhanced situational awareness for incident response, significantly streamlining compliance with federal mandates. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he pioneered a remote vulnerability patching solution that ensured the secure, seamless update of workstations for a distributed workforce.

Lau holds a B.S. in computer engineering from Boston University.
