John A. Volpe Transportation Internship
Program Features
This is a developmental internship program where the intern works side-by-side with leaders and experts in the field of transportation on both technical and policy projects.
The internship is for up to two years. It offers:
- One-year tuition assistance of up to $10,000 (depending upon the course curriculum). There is a provision for continuing students to be considered to receive a second year of tuition assistance.
- A service agreement is required to receive the tuition assistance. This service agreement would require the recipient to return to work at the Volpe Center following the academic period during which they received the tuition assistance.
- Competitive salary commensurate with level of education and previous professional experience as determined by the Federal General Schedule Qualification Standards.
- A required combination of Volpe Center work and academic study.

- Project assignments will be based upon the recipient's background and career interests and will be related to any of the following goals as described in the U.S. Department of Transportation and Research and Innovative Technology Administration’s transportation goals:
- Safety
- Mobility
- Global Connectivity
- Environment Stewardship
- Security
Open to all students who:
- Are in, or been accepted into, an accredited graduate level program for the 2008 – 2009 academic year in the engineering, scientific, or social sciences disciplines,
- Are United States citizens; AND
- Have an interest in contributing to the future of transportation.
