Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge - Comprehensive Conservation Plan
Volpe is preparing a draft comprehensive conservation plan (CCP) and associated National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) document and environmental impact statement for Chincoteague and Wallops Island National Wildlife Refuges located in Accomack County in the state of Virginia.
The National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997 required that all refuges within NWRS develop CCPs by 2012. CCPs are intended to describe future conditions of a refuge and provide long-range guidance and management direction to achieve the purposes of the refuge, refuge policy requirements, and the mission of the NWRS.
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) mandates that the refuges develop either an environmental assessment or an environmental impact statement in the CCP.
This project builds upon an alternative transportation study conducted for the Chincoteague NWR as part of an agreement with the Fish and Wildlife Service in support of several projects funded through the FTA Paul S. Sarbanes Transit in Parks (TRIP) program that focus on reducing congestion and increasing safety for transportation networks in federal lands.
