Greenhouse gas emissions from transportation account for about 28 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. As we work together to address the profound climate crisis, the U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s 2021 speaker series, Innovation for a Sustainable, Equitable Transportation System, explored how to transition to a low-/no-carbon transportation system—one that enables disadvantaged communities to gain access to mobility, jobs, and economic opportunity.

Susan Shaheen, PhD, co-director, Transportation Sustainability Research Center of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, presented her talk "Strategies to Overcome Transportation Barriers for Rent Burdened Residents" as part of the U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s 2021 thought leadership series, Innovation for a Sustainable, Equitable Transportation System, on September 23, 2021.

About the Speaker

Dr. Susan ShaheenSusan Shaheen, PhD, is a pioneer and thought leader in innovative mobility strategies. She was among the first to research and write about the changing dynamics in shared mobility and likely scenarios automated vehicles might gain prominence.

Shaheen is a professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a co-director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center of the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), Berkeley and director of the UC ITS’ Resilient and Innovative Mobility Initiative.

Shaheen has a PhD from UC Davis and an MS from the University of Rochester. She has authored 77 journal articles, more than 125 reports and proceedings articles, 20 book chapters, and co-edited two books.

Shaheen is chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Executive Committee. She received the 2017 Roy W. Crum Award from TRB for her distinguished achievements in transportation research. In May 2016, Shaheen was named one of the top 10 academic thought leaders in transportation by the Eno Transportation Foundation.
