BLM National Long Range Transportation Plan
The purpose of this Bureau of Land Management (BLM) National Long Range Transportation Plan (NLRTP) is to provide a guiding vision and set of goals and objectives for the BLM’s transportation program. In many ways transportation is the unsung hero of the BLM in sustaining its mission. The value of BLM’s transportation system is often under-represented due to a lack of data, funding and staff capacity. The NLRTP will help the BLM tell the story of how its transportation system operates today and how it could operate in the future. This story is not only important for BLM’s partners and the public, but is also a critical message internally, since so many of the Bureau’s program areas rely on its transportation system.
In addition to telling the right story about the BLM’s transportation system, the NLRTP also aims to provide process streamlining and organizational guidance as well as consistency and coordination across states. It will offer a platform to highlight best practices and capture institutional knowledge. In many ways, the NLRTP will provide a framework for the BLM to manage its transportation assets similarly to the way that State DOTs and MPOs have learned to manage theirs, but tailored to the unique needs of the multi-use agency.
Timeline: Volpe facilitated the NLRTP kick-off meeting in July 2018 and plans to finalize the plan in early 2020.
