Landing Systems Development and Evaluations

The Landing Systems Development and Evaluations category includes the following projects:

Navigation/Landing/Surveillance System Engineering. The Volpe Center will provide technical support to the FAA's efforts in the modernization of the National Airspace System's navigation, landing and surveillance subsystems by assisting in the performance system engineering of emerging ground, airborne, and spaced-based technologies. It will also assist system engineering activities by conducting special studies and analyses in support of various related projects.

System Engineering Support for TFM Product Integration. The Volpe Center will provide engineering support to the Traffic Flow Management (TFM) Integrated Product Team (IPT) for the integration of the four major TFM product lines (CTAS/AERA,ETMS/ATMS,DSP,SMA) into a single , multifaceted product line that interfaces properly with the various automation platforms (e.g. ARTS IIA, IIIA, IIIE, STARS, HID, DSR) and into NAS. In addition, this product line must interface properly with the appropriate weather systems, the Terminal Data Link functions (including Automatic Dependent Surveillance), the NAS communications systems and with the TFM domain. The Center will perform analysis needed to ensure appropriate interfaces and will prepare the requisite Interface Control documents. The Volpe Center will also develop a structure to allow the four major TFM products to share data and resources as needed.

Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) II System Support. The FAA's TCAS program office is working with industry to implement a revised Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance system (TCAS II). RTCA Special Committee 147 is the mechanism for this cooperative effort between government and industry. The Volpe Center will support this effort by providing technical and program management for the verification and validation (V&V) of changes to TCAS collision avoidance logic. The Volpe Center will also provide TCAS system -level support as required.
