02-FT1 Application of Remote Sensing Technologies to Transit System Infrastructure Security
Question: I do not have specific ideas for developing the sensors themselves but I have expertise, experience, and innovative thinking to address how to transform the data originating from sensors into valuable information. Is this something you are looking for in this SBIR? Or are you mostly interested in new sensors?
Answer: This topic was purposely described in a broad fashion to stimulate innovative thinking about how existing and developing sensing technologies could be used in providing security to transit systems/infrastructure. The information generated by sensors used to monitor transit facilities needs to be collected, analyzed, interperted, and when appropriate acted upon, very quickly. Any system, procedure, device, etc. that could perform these functions, and be commercially viable would serve the purposes of this research topic.
Question: I know there has been a lot of research in the field of "Remote Sensing" sponsored by the DOT. Is this SBIR designed to provide a direct path for technology transfer for that research?
Answer: This SBIR topic and any potential contract award stands apart from any past or current FTA sponsored research on remote sensing. The objective of this Phase I research is to determine the technical feasibility of a new idea, concept, device, etc. involving remote sensing technology applied to transit infrastructure security. It is not designed to utilize findings or results from other remote sensing research sponsored by DOT.
