Track Systems Research

For more than 25 years, we have supported the FRA in Track Systems research. The Track Systems Research Program fosters railroad safety and economic efficiency by enabling track engineers to schedule inspections and maintenance based on the actual performance of the railroad track. We support research in the following areas: rail integrity, track stability, rail restraint, vehicle track interaction, track degradation, grade crossing safety, and risk assessment of track structures. We provide technical support to the FRA in its rulemaking and enforcement rolea fundamental part of FRA's safety enhancement activity. Our work includes developing engineering data, analyses, predictive tools, and inspection techniques. Our engineering studies have supported the FRA's effort to reduce the number of track failures-caused derailments. The results of these engineering studies have been applied to the development of new safety standards, and better industry inspection and maintenance practices.
