Smart Card Technology
Our work with state and local agencies involves the implementation of "smart cards" wallet-sized cards with embedded silicon chips capable of storing information and communicating with external devices. Smart cards store value and information, allowing the user to purchase products and services or enter controlled access networks and facilities. Their simplicity and ease of use makes them especially useful for everyday transactions that often require the use of exact change: transit fares, parking fees, pay phones and tolls. Because the elimination of cash transactions can significantly reduce the administrative costs of fare collection, transit agencies throughout the country are looking at making smart cards the basis of cashless fare systems. Our staff has helped transit agencies develop regional strategies for implementing smart cards. We have supported the Federal Transit Administration to develop guidelines for development of multi-purpose smart card programs and partnerships among transit agencies, toll and parking authorities, financial institutions, universities and large employers.
