Safety at Grade Crossings

Four quadrant gate system illustration on a dense railroad passenger line.

Making grade crossings safer has been our business for 25 years. During the last 25 years there has been approximately a 70 percent reduction in the annual accident and fatality rate at grade crossings. Until recently the primary focus of grade crossing research has been the safety of motor vehicle drivers, but with the development of high-speed railway lines, the potential risk to rail passengers has become a serious concern. Our staff has assisted the FRA in risk management techniques for high-speed service. For example, we recently conducted a detailed evaluation of the risks associated with high-speed rail grade crossings on Amtrak's Empire corridor in New York State.
