Metric Measurement Requirements

Volpe Center Metric Measurement Requirements

Metric Conversion is Alive and Well!

The Metric Conversion Act designates the metric system of measurement as the preferred system of weights and measures for United States trade and commerce. The Act requires that each agency use the metric system of measurement in all business related transactions, except to the extent that such use is impracticable or is likely to cause significant inefficiencies or loss of markets to United States firms.

Incorporation of Metrics into Technical Specifications and Statements of Work

To the extent practicable and consistent with commercial practices, Volpe Center procurement requirements for construction, equipment and facility services are described in either dual measurements (English and metric), or metric measurements. Contractors are required to utilize metric units of measure when responding to Volpe Center solicitations containing metric measurement specifications.

Conversion Tables

Conversion tables are available to assist you with converting from the English standard measurement system to the metric system and are available as an HTML page, downloadable Power Point file (209KB) or as a web graphic.
