Volpe Center Support for Year 2000 Issues (USPS and FAA)
As the new millennium approaches, federal agencies are assessing their information systems to verify that they are Year 2000 (Y2K) compliant. Most recently, the Volpe Center has been providing support to the Untied States Postal Service (USPS) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in their efforts to assure their systems will be operational on January 1, 2000. For the USPS, Mr. Rick Jordan, of the Automation Technology Division, and Mr. Todd Green, of EG&G, are currently addressing compliance issues for the Facilities Management System for the Windows (FMSWIN) Project Subsystem. This system is a financial management tool to support the USPS in facility project management. Messrs. Jordan and Green have developed test scripts and test results for the FMSWIN Project Subsystem, and recently delivered the work to the USPS. The test scripts will be used by the USPS to conduct their own testing on the FMSWIN operational system.
For the FAA, the Volpe Center's Telecommunications Division is working to assure Y2K compliance for the FAA's Telecommunications Information Management System (TIMS) Program. TIMS is a suite of desktop tools accessing an integrated database of information on the FAA's communications circuits and equipment. Volpe Center staff recently completed five major activities that put TIMS on schedule to meet Y2K compliance. Those activities included a renovation of the TIMS database and all associated server and client software, a report detailing the changes to the database and all associated server and client software, Y2K system test plan and test descriptions, a validation plan, and a Y2K contingency plan.
