High-Speed Ground Transportation Safety (FRA)
As part of the Rail Equipment Safety Program, the Volpe Center's Structures and Dynamics Division supports FRA's Office of Research and Development with efforts to develop engineering data required in establishing safety standards for passenger equipment. Associated with this effort, Mr. David Tyrell served as the luncheon speaker at the recent FRA-sponsored Public Outreach Meeting on High-Speed Ground Transportation Programs, in Williamsburg, VA. Mr. Tyrell presented an overview of FRA's high-speed crashworthiness research, including a description of key research results to date. Separately, Dr. Herbert Weinstock, Messrs. Tyrell and Ike Tingos, and Ms. Stephanie Markos, all of the Office of Systems Engineering, participated in meetings of the American Public Transit Association's (APTA) Task Force on Passenger Rail Equipment Safety Standards (PRESS), in Dallas, TX. The PRESS Task Force is developing standards and recommended practices for passenger equipment. Dr. Weinstock and Ms. Markos also participated in the APTA Commuter Rail Meeting.
