Motor Carrier Safety Research (FHWA)

The Center's Economic Analysis Division recently delivered a final report to a Motor Carrier information analysis division entitled "Motor Carrier Safety Fitness Determination: An Improved Process." Mr. Don Wright, of the Center, has led a team supporting the FHWA Office of Motor Carriers (OMC) in the definition of an improved process for determining the safety fitness of motor carriers. The thirty month effort, which required extensive and intensive public and private sector interaction, culminated in a proposed process consisting of a comprehensive integrated approach to applying and enforcing OMC motor carrier fitness programs and standards while better utilizing limited resources and staff. Part of this effort has resulted in the development of an automated motor carrier assessment methodology and system (SafeStat) for the Commercial Vehicle Information System. SafeStat will help OMC more efficiently identify motor carriers requiring closer attention or more intensive inspections.

Automated Motor Carriers Compliance Review Program (FHWA)

Ms. Diane Ort, of the Center's Office of Research and Analysis, recently presented an overview of the Automated Compliance Review Program (ACRP) to the Office of Motor Carriers (OMC) MIS Group Meeting, held in Albany, NY. OMC is developing the ACRP system to provide an alternative means of determining the safety fitness of motor carriers. ACRP will supplement the current process of compliance review visits to motor carriers to determine safety fitness ratings. It will provide carriers with the opportunity to run menu-driven software supplied by OMC and send the resulting data to OMC for a safety rating. ACRP is intended for motor carriers that have not shown signs of risk, and will allow a safety investigator's workload to be focused on carriers that have shown signs of risk to the motoring public.
