Independent Evaluations of Driver Acceptance of In-Vehicle Technology
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology has the potential to decrease the incidence and severity of crashes by preventing or minimizing their consequences. Even when these technologies are available, drivers must accept and use them as intended to obtain their safety benefits. The Volpe Center has carried out independent evaluations of crash avoidance technologies for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and assesses driver acceptance as part of each evaluation. The independent evaluations of an automotive collision avoidance system (ACAS) and a combined lane departure and curve speed warning system (RDCW) are available below.
The Volpe Center is currently conducting independent evaluations of an Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety System (IVBSS) and a Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance System Limited to Stop Sign and Traffic Signal Violations (CICAS-V).
