Locomotive Crewmembers Alertness Monitoring Systems

The Volpe Center is starting a study to evaluate current technology used to monitor the alertness of locomotive crewmembers. Volpe is looking for contacts with knowledge or technology in this field.

Project Details

The U.S. Dept. of Transportation plans to investigate the performance of systems or devices intended to measure alertness or vigilance of locomotive crewmembers. Such technologies or systems should be able to display information about crew alertness or vigilance to the crew in real time and/or warn of loss of alertness. Devices or systems to be considered will include but not be limited to those that measure performance, fine motion, gross body motion, postural changes, physiological state, and ocular motion. Organizations that have such systems should provide documentation or descriptions of the technology including the basic principles to:
