Frasca 242 Light Twin Engine Flight Simulator

Photo: Frasca 242 flight simulator external view

This laboratory supports a Frasca 242 Light Twin Research Flight Simulator configured as a Piper Aztec. This configuration complements our research aircraft capabilities. The simulator is completely equipped with avionics and instruments typical of this class of modern aircraft. As an enhancement to the standard local operating modes, the simulator is linked to a local area network (LAN) of PC computers that support a wide range of custom control, display, and data acquistion tasks.

A Norhtstar M3 GPS receiver modified to accept simulator postition data is installed in the panel to support GPS research. The same GPS set is installed in the research aircraft. An Avidyne Flight Computer/Display is installed in the simulator center avonics stack. The LAN provides simulated GPS and Air Data to the Avidyne to facilitate electronic moving map and terrain depiction research. This installation mimics an Avidyne installation in the research aircraft. This dual simulator/aircraftcapability provides for the measurement, recording, and validation of pilot performance.
