USPS AvSec HAZMAT Program, 2001

Previous Project

SPONSOR: United States Postal Service
VOLPE INTERNAL: Service and Operations Assessment Division, DTS-49

The Volpe Center is supporting the USPS in its effort to train over 350,000 postal employees and inform the public in hazardous materials (HAZMAT) awareness for all mail shipped through the postal surface, air and water transportation and distribution networks.

The GIS task was to create a map of the US and its territories that portray USPS facilities requiring trainer training. The map is updated on a regular basis to indicate which facilities have had training completed. The information is received in spreadsheet form, and ArcView updates the map via an automated script. ESRI ArcView 3.2 software was used.

The map shows the locations of USPS facilities where training is to be conducted. All facilities that have completed training are depicted with a check mark superimposed.
