VOLPE INTERNAL: Service and Operations Assessment Division, DTS-49
The Volpe Center developed a computer-based road management system for the National Parks Service. This prototype was developed for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. The system integrated existing road inventory program databases on a single computer platform, provided spatial and network analysis capabilities, and supported graphic and multimedia displays for presentations. The integration included pavement, bridge and safety management systems, and was used for prioritizing road maintenance budgets and analyzing accidents. The road management system was developed using TRANSCAD. The GIS tasks involved creating base maps, appending a linear referenced system to a road network base map, and linking road inventory database to the road network. A photolog display capability was also added to the system.
