Mapping of Ambient Sound Levels, 1998

Previous Project | Next Project

SPONSOR: Federal Aviation Administration
VOLPE INTERNAL: Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division, DTS-34

The Volpe Center's Acoustics Facility of the Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division was selected to support the FAA's preparation of a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) regarding the proposed conversion of Homestead Air Reserve Base in Southern Florida to a civilian facility. They performed an exhaustive ambient noise measurement study in the surrounding area. Volpe's GIS group assisted the Acoustics Facility by mapping measured ambient data, which aided in the visualization and interpretation of the sound level environment in the region. Land cover maps were also prepared for the area with data obtained from the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission. ArcInfo and ArcInfo Grid module were used for the GIS work. Maps appear in the publication "Ambient Sound Levels at Four Department of Interior Conservation Units In Support of Homestead Air Force Base Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement", June 1999.
