SPONSOR: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
VOLPE INTERNAL: Accident Prevention Division, DTS-73
The Volpe Center's Accident Prevention Division is conducting an independent evaluation of an automotive rear-end crash avoidance system (RECAS) for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. For the evaluation, General Motors Corporation and University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute will conduct an extensive Field Operational Test (FOT) of the system with drivers driving in a natural environment under a variety of typical driving conditions in the State of Michigan. The Volpe Center's GIS support for this evaluation consists of developing an algorithm to geographically locate the test vehicles during the RECAS FOT so as to identify characteristics of the roadways. This support includes identifying, evaluating, and processing the necessary data sets, developing and testing the roadway attribute algorithm and developing and testing a data verification program of the algorithm results. ArcInfo and ArcView GIS software, and AML and PERL programming languages are used for the GIS project support.
