The Volpe Center is committed to creating awareness of and providing remedies for environmental and occupational safety and health (OSH) hazards that threaten the health and safety of workers and the general public. Through job hazard analyses, site assessments, surveys, technical reviews and preparation of guidance material, and compliance audits the Volpe Center has identified potentially harmful threats and has engineered solutions or developed policies to address the hazards. Examples include the establishment of a comprehensive occupational safety program for FAA maintenance technicians, a comprehensive review of the effects of noise on health and well being, the characterization of electromagnetic fields and radiation associated with advanced transportation systems, and the development of Hazardous Materials training modules for the Postal Service.
