Special Series: Avian Flu: Preparing for a Pandemic

CTUG, in cooperation with the Director's office, is pleased to offer a special series on the Avian Flu: Preparing for a Pandemic. Through December and early 2006, CTUG will host a series of presentations related to Pandemic Influenza including the Volpe Center's current and past work related the primary themes of the national strategy -- Preparedness and Communication, Surveillance and Detection, and Response and Containment.

Background

On November 1, 2005, President Bush announced a National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza, calling on the Federal government to develop and implement plans to address the threat of a pandemic. To answer this call, the U.S. DOT, has been developing a plan to address 1. maintaining national transportation system operations in supporting the national response to a pandemic influenza and 2. maintaining internal DOT operations in order to fulfill the DOT's mission.

Following briefings on the Volpe Center's experience and capabilities related to preparation, communication, detection, response, containment, and recovery challenges, Deputy Secretary encouraged the Center to lend support to the DOT Avian Flu Task Force and to reach out to state and local governments on preparedness issues. She also encouraged ideas on how best to support the Department as it prepares for a potential outbreak.

Volpe Director Curt Tompkins established a Volpe Center team to respond to her request that we help her think about an intermodal systems approach to preparing for and dealing with the potential avian flu crisis. The Center has been lending support to the DOT effort, through the Research and Innovative Technology Administration.

CTUG invites you to join our colleagues in a series of special presentations to explore Volpe's role in our Nation's pandemic influenza strategy through the Center's current and past work related projects. Please see our series schedule page for info on the presentations given.
