Creation of a New, Sustainable Fuel Dynamic - Aviation's Approach via the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuel Initiative (CAAFI)

About the Presentation:
The CAAFI mission is to promote the development of alternative fuel options that offer equivalent levels of safety and compare favorably with petroleum-based jet fuel on cost and environmental bases, with the specific goal of enhancing security of energy supply. This presentation will provide an overview of the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) goals, activities, and accomplishments. The CAAFI coalition includes over 300 sponsors and stakeholders worldwide. In addition to developing roadmaps for R&D activities and developing assessment tools for environmental aspects of aviation alternative fuels, CAAFI serves as a catalyst to accelerate to technology development and deployment of aviation alternative fuels with investors and governments.
About the speaker: Rich Altman serves as Executive Director of the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI). Rich co-founded CAAFI in 2006 with U.S. Airline, Manufacturer and FAA Sponsors. Rich is an advisor to United Nations (ICAO) and is a consultant to EU fuel initiatives. A 42 year aviation veteran Rich spent 39 years with United Technologies / Pratt & Whitney initially as a propulsion engineer branching into Program Management and Advanced Technology Business Development. A founding member of the US Transportation Research Board Committee on Aviation effects on the Environment, he authored its papers on Technology Deployment and Alternative Fuels. He is a member of the FAA PARTNER Center of Excellence Advisory Board considering carbon life cycle modeling and air quality measurement. He serves on the Transportation Research Board, Airport Cooperative Research Program Advisory panel monitoring its project to create an alternative fuels handbook for airport fuel suppliers. Rich holds Engineering Degrees from the Brooklyn and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutes and an MBA from the University of Connecticut.
