CAD/Database Technology Demonstration

Jeff Feinsod, Aperture Technologies, Inc., demonstrated the latest release of an Aperture product, CAD/Database technology, currently used by two Volpe Center projects and is being investigated for use by a third. As the latest in this technology, it is worth examining for use by a variety of projects dealing with issues such as EPA requirements, security, telecommunications tracking, inventory and space management, etc.

CAD/Database technology is a high precision drawing tool with an integrated relational database. Aperture can be described as a 'visual database'. Some examples of its use include:

  • Booz Allen & Hamilton use it to manage space occupancy and utilization in their 85 facilities world wide.
  • The Boston Stock Exchange uses it to track telecommunication and computer networks.
  • The Canadian Department of National Defense networks Aperture and has 200 people accessing the same project. Symbol libraries can store drawings of objects such as computers, furniture, maps, etc. along with their basic data.
  • NASA Astronauts use it on laptops to plan and locate items in the space shuttles such as toothbrushes and experiments.
  • The US Navy uses it on pen-based laptops strapped to investigators to indicate damage and search for damage trends in over 800 naval vessels.
  • Planned Parenthood and the Chase Manhattan Bank use the ability to scan in photos as a security check for their guards.
  • A California consultant uses it to help ranchers track 17,000 head of cattle in three states.
  • Aperture projects also can use scanned images such as photos of actual equipment or personnel.

Aperture runs on either a Macintosh or a PC using MS-Windows. The latest version includes compatibility with OLE Automation allowing interaction with other applications. For example, data can be copied to Excel, analyzed into a graph, and the graph can then be added to the Aperture project.

Training and the World Wide Web

Jim Miller, MIT and OSF, discussed Training in association with the World Wide Web and the current status of Web features. Recently, an article on OSF's World Wide Web appeared in the Boston Globe.

Docket Management System (DMS)

Jack Perkins, DMS Project Manager, presented the major features of the Docket Management System (DMS), a state-of-the-art imaging system used to streamline the DOT General Counsel's legal docket system. There was a dedication ceremony for DMS with distinguished guests such as the Vice President, the DOT Secretary, and the DOT General Counsel present.
