The Structures and Dynamics Division maintains and applies expertise in the areas of vehicle guideway interaction, mechanics of wear, fatigue and fracture, soil mechanics and vehicle impact energy management to support improved performance and safety of the rail transportation system.

Capabilities

  • Assesses the dynamic performance of ground transportation vehicles
  • Applies materials engineering technologies to predict transportation system component behavior in in-service environments and improve component serviceability
  • Analyzes data from accident and incident reports, inspections, tests, and other sources to identify causes and propose solutions that will prevent or mitigate hazards
  • Plans, manages, implements and interprets analytic and experimental investigations of vehicles and guideway structures, dynamics, and materials behavior.
  • Participates in industry/government committees and task forces to further the goals of improved vehicle safety and serviceability.
