Energy Analysis and Sustainability
New policies, technologies, fuels, and operational changes can reduce transportation sector greenhouse gas emissions and petroleum consumption. The transportation sector role also plays an important role in the distribution of alternative energy resources. Federal, state, and local governments implement a range of policies and programs to foster innovation and investment in these areas. In-depth analysis can facilitate sound decisions regarding these policies and programs.
The Energy Analysis and Sustainability Division's mission is to:
- Plan and implement qualitative and quantitative analysis to support decisions regarding policies and programs relevant to the reduction of transportation sector petroleum consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Plan and implement qualitative and quantitative analysis to support decisions regarding transportation-related policies and programs relevant to the distribution of alternative energy resources.
- Develop and apply software capable of integrating engineering, economic, and statistical disciplines toward the analysis of regulatory and other program and policy options.
- Facilitate coordination among agencies with roles related to transportation sector energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and the distribution of alternative energy resources.
Capabilities
- Development and application of decision support software that integrates engineering, industry analysis, economic analysis, energy analysis, and emissions estimation (e.g., Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Compliance and Effects Modeling System, used to estimate the costs, effects, and benefits of potential new CAFE standards, and National Energy Modeling System).
- Qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis to support policy and program planning and development (e.g., technology and fuel roadmaps and scenario development).
- Technical support for deployment (e.g., vehicle procurement and maintenance planning).
- Acquisition support (e.g., proposal review, contract oversight).
- Facilitation of interagency workgroups (e.g., meeting planning and facilitation, workgroup documentation and reporting).
Featured Work
- Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE)
- Forecasting Short Term U.S. Aviation Demand
- Biomass Research & Development Board Support
- Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) and National Fuel Cell Bus Program (NFCBP)
