Volpe Center Air Quality Facility

Projects - Technical Support Working Group (TSWG)

Oklahoma City Dispersion Study, 2003

Oklahoma City Dispersion Study In support of the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG), the Volpe Center's Air Quality Facility participated in the Joint Urban 2003 Study in Oklahoma City, OK. The measurement component of the study, took place from June 29 thru July 28, of 2003. During this period, concentrations were measured of released Sulfur Hexafluride gas in the Park Avenue street canyon. The measured concentrations were to be used to assess current urban dispersion models. Two models assessed: the Hazard Prediction and Assessment Capability (HPAC) and the Quick Urban & Industrial Dispersion Modeling System (QUIC). The measured concentrations were compared with modeled concentrations, using QUIC. In comparing measured versus modeled results, several variables were tested, such as number of particles, wind angle, and algorithms. This report discusses the Joint Urban 2003 project and the results of modeling, using measured data from Joint Urban 2003.
