Volpe Center Acoustics Facility Staff Biography
Roger L. Wayson
Dr. Wayson has been given the title of national expert as a member of the Volpe Center. Prior to Volpe, Dr. Wayson was a full professor on the faculty at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He went to UCF, after completing his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at Vanderbilt University in 1989. His Master's Degree in Environmental Health Engineering was awarded by the University of Texas at Austin in 1985. Dr. Wayson's undergraduate degree, also from the University of Texas was awarded in 1980 in Environmental Engineering. Dr. Wayson is a licensed Professional Engineer in Tennessee and Florida. He is a member of the Air & Waste Management Association, the Transportation Research Board, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Acoustic Society of America, the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has been or is currently an officer in most of these organizations and is a fellow member of the Air & Waste Management Association.
Dr. Wayson's key areas of research are the evaluation and abatement of noise and air pollution from transportation systems. He has worked on such research since 1973, first with the Texas Highway Department (now Texas Department of Transportation), continued with the mentioned Universities, and now with the Volpe Center.
Dr. Wayson has been very active in research and published on airports, highways, railways (including high speed rail), and other community sources In regards to air quality and noise. He has also been active on projects, performing the air quality analysis on over many major projects and numerous small ones. Dr. Wayson also has considerable experience in air quality monitoring, having designed and in charge of the Texas Mobile Monitoring Systems used by the Texas Department of Transportation for thirteen years. This experience has led to other air quality monitoring work on other major projects. He has also had considerable experience in community noise monitoring, primarily for transportation projects.
Dr. Wayson has been heavily involved in dispersion modeling research. He participated in the development and field validation of the TEXIN model and was a Principal Investigator for the development of FLINT. Both of these models predict the dispersion of air pollutants near highways, especially in the complex situations involving interrupted flow. He is a member of FAA's Design Review Group for the EDMS model, is just now involved in research on a puff based model for highways and another for aircraft operations. He also is a co-author of the UCF Community Noise model and the Florida Department of Transportation Rail Model. His modeling work has been quite extensive in both noise and air quality.
Dr. Wayson taught engineering courses on general air pollution analysis (including dispersion modeling), air pollution abatement design, air pollution monitoring, environmental analysis of transportation systems, and outdoor noise control. He has taught numerous short courses on air pollution and noise analysis/abatement for highways.
